You may always ask for a transcript of your account that shows that an
extension form posted.

If your withholding and/or estimated tax payments were enough to cover
any conceivable tax liability, I wouldn't worry about it. File your
return when it is done.

Since it sounds like you will be filing late, you still need to make
your first quarter estimated tax payment by April 15.

Default Filing extension gets lost?

Having had papers get lost at the IRS, I am concerned about what would
happen if my Form 4868 gets lost. My wife sent in the form but has no
proof of mailing. There is sufficient overpayment by estimated tax to
cover the first tax installment for 2009.

Does anyone have a clue as to how the IRS treats such a situation?
