Turns out it was a wild goose case. The TaxCut "Help" person knew
almost next to nothing and "confirmed" that the program for Business
had the identical interface as the 1040 package (it doesn't but it
"looks" the same and used the same file strucxture. Refused to
escalate me. I called back and got someone somewhat knowledge about
hte Business version who told me the fo;es were mdb and index files
and were difficult to move around. He said the Busness program was
written by a third party. Snooped a bit and found out it is a
division called TxWise within CC/h Corpration and is likely a rewrite
of their write up software for CPA firms/Tax Services.

Unformaute because not only do the reflect somewhat negatively on htem
selves by writing mission crucial software for a wide audience in MS
Access but they commit a cardnial programming sin in this century by
hard coding the file tree. Seems the problem stems from loading the
executables in the D:\Program Files tree rather than the C\Program
Files tree. It successfully allows you to chose a D: tree but then
saves the data files in the same tree and forgets about then later and
you can't browse to them. I do a lot of programming and painfully
learned to seprate data and program files as far apart as possible
(think of the current juvenile fad of "Cloud" computing, Fog computing
would be more like it but at leat it attains separation.

Thanks for the thread, hope this adds to TaxCut lore.

Have you considered using .T07 as an extension

Thats not likely to be it. I have mine set to not show hidden files, but it
shows all the Taxcut files.

Likely it is a "hidden file", which do not show in Explorer by default.
In Windows Explorer, go to "Tools", then "Folder Options...". Click on
the "View" tab. A little way down, click on "Show hidden files and
folders".

Mine are visible to Explorer in a directory called Taxcut in My documents.

I have only called Taxcut once; it was a little frustrating because the
person didn't have any idea what my complain was, but they sent it to a
higher lever, where it worked just fine for them. So I had to find an
alternate way to do it. But I can't blame them; if they can't duplicate my
error, how can they fix it?
You are in a similar position; the error isn't in their software, so what
are they supposed to do?

If you have Windows set for the default search parameters, a lot of file
types are deemed system files, and won't be found. You have to set the
search for examining all files and to show hidden/system files. XP
should find your tax files.

Default TaxCut Files are Invisible to Windows Explorer

When I installed TaxCut for Business 2008 and tried to import last
year's file TaxCut couldn't find it in its Browse window. I went
looking using Windows XP's Search applet, looking for *.T07 files
using options to find system and hidden files. Didn't find any (I
KNOW 99+%I didn't delete them).

So I started a new 2008 file, named it TaxCutReturn. Put nonsense in
the company name field, saved it then closed TaxCut. Reopened TaxCut
and it found and loaded what must be TaxCutReturn.T08.

Looked in MyDocuments/TaxCut/. No files visible. Searched for
TaxCutReturn.T08 and *.T08 again in Windows. No files found. Opened
TaxCut again, file was found and loaded with the nonsense company
name.

How did TaxCut find TaxCurtReturn,T08 when for all practical purposes
to Windows the file doesn't exist? Well TaxCut likely stored the
reference to the file as a fully qualified file name. which Windows on
a call would be able to find. But somehow it is hidden from Windows
Explorer.

TaxCut Tech Support Tier 1 was not helpful and refused to escalate.

Any ideas? Virus?

========================================= MODERATOR'S COMMENT:
I suggest you contact Tax-Cut support.
