Pub 550 is the best document there is. Unfortunately it
is very detailed, dry, technical reading but there is no
real way around this.

Default Capital Gains Tax Treatment of Bonds

Can someone provide a link to a relatively simple, straightforward
discussion of the capital gains tax treatment of bonds. Everything
that I have found so far is full of accounting/taxation jargon which
is assumed on the reader's part. I'd like to understand things such as
if there is a difference in tax treatment depending on whether or not
you hold the bond to maturity. Also, are CD's purchased in the
secondary market treated the same as taxable bonds, as far as capital
gains is concerned?
