What's this??? A stimulus check again THIS year?

First I've heard of it.

maybe we should talk about how last year's checks has influenced this
year's tax season and the grief it's caused taxpayers and pros alike in
processing. Here's hoping "they" won't do us any more favors.

If there's a stimulus check this year, filing a return may be a good
way to guarantee the stimulus check. I'm not sure if they will send a
stimulus check if no return was filed, but taxes were withheld.

According to the IRS website, it should be possible to e-file your first
return unless you are under 16 years old. They say to insert "0" for your
last year's AGI but leave last year's PIN blank. They used to have a
mail-in attestation form (8453-OL) but they discontinued that this year.

See http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,...0,00.html#PIN2

Not withstanding all that, spending 42 cents to get back $5.00 isn't such a
bad deal. I still send in $3.00 rebate coupons.

The following site indicates she did right, as a first-time filer, to
enter an AGI of 0 for last year:
http://turbotax.intuit.com/support/k...le/ef/343.html

What software did she use to efile?

I suggest that it will be educational.

While I don't use it, TaxAct federal basic is free, even for install
on your computer (vs online which is less desirable IMHO). But that
free choice would mean mailing in the return I think. It is well
respected. There are a lot of free choices including efile for
those with gross income of $56,000 or less in 2008.

I'm not an expert on this, but I think that's just for paperless e-filing.
Is the software allowing her the option to e-file the return and mail in the
attestation form?

I would never want the fear of the IRS to prevent any taxpayer
from claiming allowed refunds.

Go forth and file.

Default Very First Federal Tax Return

This is the first year my daughter will be filing a federal tax
return. She is trying to e-file and is required to provide a prior
year AGI or PIN number. She tried to file using an AGI of 0, but the
return was rejected. Is it possible to e-file your first return?

Also, my daughter has very little income (<$1500) and is not required
to file. By filing, however, she will receive a refund of $5 for the
federal income tax paid in 2008. Is there any disadvantage to filing
to receive this small amount (i.e., is it advantageous to delay being
"on the grid" with the IRS)?
