It doesn't seem like much competition for the tax software
companies. It's apparently not much more than filling out
the forms by hand on the screen instead of on paper. There's
no interview or guidance. It does some of the arithmetic,
one form at a time, but you have to calculate the tax
yourself.

The introductory page says:
"These online forms are electronic versions of paper IRS tax
forms. ... If you're used to doing your Federal return using
IRS paper forms, Free File Fillable Forms will look
familiar. Entering your information is just like filling in
IRS forms."

Would it really behove them to do so? You still have to file a state
return in many states. You might also like to carry over certain
information from one year to another, or perform planning for the
current tax year. BTW, last I heard, the Free File Alliance agreement
with the IRS ends this Oct. 15th...
