Can you tell me what the max income is for a married couple filing
jointly?

She should also receive, shortly after year-end, a tax year reporting
form, 1099-SSA, showing this income.

Sounds similar to the way our regular Social Security benefits are
taxed. Mass. does not tax these benefits.

So the SSDI benefits are taxed in the same way that regular Social
Security benefits are taxed, correct?

========================================= MODERATOR'S COMMENT:
Correct.

Depending of course on whether or not daughter is married, in which case
the threshold is different from the 25,000$ my colleague has quoted.

Federal: Maybe, depending on her total income. See the worksheet for Line
20 of the 1040.

Mass: I don't know, and I don't recall anyone on the board familiar with
Mass. Many states start with Federal AGI and then make adjustments to it.
Check the state instructions.

I cannot speak for the state, but on her federal income tax, if half her
Social security benefits plus her other income is over $25,000 then some
of her social security benefits are taxable.

Default is SSDI taxable?

My daughter has MS. She was just approved for Social Security
Disability benefits.

Is this money subject to federal income tax? What about state? She
lives in Massachusetts.
