I was wondering about this too. The IRS is in an excellent position to
collate income statistics, but how would it know about assets,
especially about the piles of $100 bills I keep under the mattress?

About 2% of the adult (head of households) were worth $1.5M.
Only about 0.1% are worth $10m or more; that is a pretty fast drop off.

I read that a few months ago in WSJ, where they explained the methedology.
Sadly I can't remember...

Interesting it is about 2%.

Default IRS Wealth Statistics

http://www.irs.gov/taxstats/article/...185880,00.html

on this page, there are links to spread sheets with IRS wealth statistics.
This page states "An estimated 2.7 million U.S. adults in 2004 had gross
assets of $1.5 million or more. . . . . A little less than 1.6 million, or
57.0 percent, of top wealth holders were men, while just under 1.2 million
were women. Overall, male top wealth holders had a higher average net worth
than their female counterparts."

One of their spreadsheets shows a breakdown, including the figure that there
are 47,000 people with total net worth exceeding $20 Million.

How does the IRS arrive at these figures?
