However, if they're posted with "X-No-Archive: Yes" then Google stops
showing them after a couple of weeks.

In reply to this and other responses.... (hmm, is it OK to deviate from
tax-related topics if the moderator actually initiated the thread?) ;-)

Let's give credit where credit is due -- all Google did was buy up the
Deja News archives (and credit to whoever may have been the custodian
before that) some number of years ago. And no, the archives do *not*
include every post ever made to Usenet or even necessarily this group.

In fact, I have experienced, first-hand, periods when Google's own copy
of the archives has had, ahem, "access problems". Just as with a tax
client, you wouldn't know about anything Google didn't show you and you
didn't ask about, would you?

That's why I stated I was ambivalent about Google and its current
custodianship of Usenet archives.

One of the benefits of using traditional newsreader software is that you
can actually download your own copy of current postings and keep them as
long and wherever you like.

Forever, actually. Google never deletes old posts. The first
messages ever posted in misc.taxes.moderated, on December
30, 1995, are still there.

I am in agreement that using a separate client that accesses a
news server is much better than using Google and is more user
friendly. However, I would not say that Google "surreptitiously
claims" that all newsgroups are Google groups. If you access a
usenet group, Google informs you that you are accessing a usenet
group (see right hand column on the Google page) and also
provides a link to an explanation as to what a usenet group is.
In addition, most news servers purge their files after a set
period of time. As Google has massive storage capacity, their
history on many groups goes back to 1981.

You can create a Google account with the same e-mail address
that you currently use in the newsgroup. You don't have to
use a Gmail address, or even have a Gmail address. I have a
Google account with the same Yahoo e-mail address that I use
to post here. My posts come from the same e-mail address,
whether I post through a news server or from Google.

I agree with Mark and others that a traditional news server
is preferable to Google. I only use Google to post from
work, where I don't have access to my regular news servers.
Google is great for searches, though, and never deletes old
posts.

MTM is a USENET newsgroup. Google surreptiously claims
all newsgroups are google groups, but they accept no
responsibility for correcting problems.

Get the free newsfeed above.

The server settings for the AIOE.ORG news server are:
server: nntp.aioe.org
Port: 563
Specify: Use Secure Connection (SSL)

There are no other requirements to gain access and post.

I think Google is a great service, particularly if you're not all that
concerned with total anonymity. I also really like the gmail account I
have. Of course, if you do not download google mail into a local email
client (Eudora in my case), your already read email is not accessible
off-line. "Popping" gmail is easy and also free, I believe, in contrast
to yahoo mail for which there is a yearly cost if you want to pop it.
(Pop is the protocol that downloads email to a local client. An
alternative protocol is IMAP, but I'm not familar with it - Eudora was
very poor with IMAP in prior versions).

I do not really like Google as a newsreader. It's OK to search with,
though.

There are enough free newsreaders and free or very low cost news servers
that no one should be concerned when an ISP gives you the finger and
shuts down its news server(s), like Verizon did for all intents and
purposes. Just get an account at a free or low cost news provider.

YMMV!

I'd strongly suggest the "real" newsfeed and reader over google other
than archives, but all you have to do is sign up w/ an id and when click
on a thread there's a "reply" button on the bottom left...

You can post through Google if you have a Google account, which is free.
Go to any Google page which has a "sign in" link, click, and follow
the instructions for creating an account.

Google has changed the account features and sign-up process over time,
but along with posting privileges I believe you also get free email and
other typical stuff, similar to Yahoo!, all in exchange for viewing
their advertising.

If you are currently on the MTM "fast approval" list (robo-moderation)
and start posting with a "user[at]gmail.com" address, it may take a short
while to get re-added to the list under your new address.

Like many, I am ambivalent about Google. The purpose of the original
post was to inform of alternate, traditional news services which don't
require advertising (or maybe just a short blurb in your sig), and which
allow you to read, post, and download using software of your choice
rather than a commercial web interface.

One can also go to google:

http://groups.google.com/group/misc....derated/topics

That will get you to a great resource for reading all posts for a good
long time. Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to actually respond
through the google site. If there is one, I would hope someone would
advise me how to do so.

ATTN: Dick -- Please note, and if you have advice on how to post a

I couldn't figure out why everything seemed dead; fortunately I had
downloaded this first.
Darned Frontiernet didn't even notify us.

Note that the above isn't the only free server.

Anyone wishing to SET UP a news server in the U.S. - I'll peer mine with
yours to get you started (but you better get other peers too).

Anyone who is losing USENET newsgroups due to
ISP dropping these newsgroups, you can get a
free newsfeed from motzarella.org
