There are a lot of rules regarding your situation, for best results you
should consult a local tax professional.

For starters, simply providing more than 1/2 the support and being an
ancestor is not sufficient for claiming a dependency exemption. Then,
adoption credits are not common and the rules, which are most likely
different between federal and state, can be complex and span multiple
years. Lastly, the SSN change is between you and the Social Security
administration. Even if someone claims a dependent with the "wrong"
SSN, a paper-based return with adequate documentation attached should
eventually overcome that particular hurdle.

Fortunately, neither you nor the grandparents will be able to file 2008
taxes until sometime early next year, so you have plenty of time.

Default Which SSN to use

I've adopted a child who will have his SSN changed due to concerns
about the birth parents (long story, matter of protecting the
child). The child's grandparents will be claiming the child on
their taxes this year due to them supporting the child for 1/2 of the
year (which is fine with me). Do they file using the child's old SSN,
or do I have to provide the new SSN?

Also, if they claim the child, I assume that I'm okay claiming the
adoption expenses (with new SSN?) without claiming the child as a
dependent this year. Am I correct in this assumption?

Thx
