and the places that take the cards outside of pharmacies and doctors
offices that do take those cards have if very well programmed in to
only accept charges
that are allowable on those accounts.

You have to keep your receipts as backup, should the expenditures be
questioned.

I hope you have to prove these were allowable medical expenses?

Otherwise, I assume that debit card can be used to charge a trip
to Vegas?

Thanks, just wanted to make sure as a Spouse on my wife's plan, that I
would be covered. And yes, a debit card does exist for this type of
account (at least through my wife's plan, it does), which does away
with the requirement to file claims. You just use the debit card.
Makes it nice and simple.

Some plans issue debit cards to be used to pay for the expenses
directly instead of cutting a check for reimbursement. Our plan works
that way. They do still require that receipts be submitted, but the
reimbursement is "pre-paid" through the use of the debit card.

Again, this is not the way our plan works. There is only a single
plan which can be used for any eligible persons. That would include
spouse and dependent children.

I would consider it a serious misfeature to have to guess separately
how much my kids would need compared to my wife and I. It's already
tough enough to make those sorts of guesses and doubling the chances
to enter "lose it" territory is just nasty.

I'm not aware of any debit card. What I've seen is that the
employee's FSA covers themselves and their spouse. To cover your
children you need a dependent FSA. As for using the FSA, just pay
your expenses -- such as co-payments for doctors, surguries, and
medicines; cost of glasses and contacts not covered by VSP; OTC
medicines (which may require a prescription/note from doctor); etc --
out of pocket. Then submit an FSA claim form with receipts to the
company that manages your FSA. If anyone has seen it work
differently, please write.

Default Health FSA for spouse of employee

I have my health insurance through my wife's employer. She is going
to set up a health FSA this year and we're wondering if the debit card
that is issued can also be used for my medical expenses or if I have
to have a separate one through my employer? (and if it can be used
through her plan, would they normally issue a separate card for
myself?). Of course, we have to decide to sign up or not sign up by
tomorrow and naturally the human resources dept won't call us back in
time for us to decide.

Thanks!
