Thanks gentlemen. Apreciate it.

One more thing. Considering it's such an optional response, should I
still do it right and send certified/return receipt?

Steve

You could do all that, or wait out the notices for them to self resolve
themselves.

If all the payments were before the due date, there should not be any
penalty or interest due at all.

Default Letter from IRS- quick question

Hi. I'm out of the country, but just heard that I have a letter from
the IRS saying:

I owe them 89.73. It shows that my tax was $x and I paid $x which
leaves 89.00 unpaid plus .44 penalty and .29 interest.

If you agree, mail in the money. They provide an envelope etc. If
you disagree, call the customer service # 1 800 829-8374. Your caller
ID: xxxxxx. Notice Number: xxx. Date: May 5, 2008.

I do not disagree with them at all. But I had already paid this back
in March.

I caught the discrepancy right after I e-payed back then. So I simply
corrected my mail-in 1040 and e-payed the additional 89.00 the same
day.

I have the receipts for both e-payments, the original and the addition
$89.

Calling in from out of the country will be somewhat difficult and I'm
thinking it should be fine to just send them an explanation letter
and a copy of the e-file receipts.

Does anybody have an opinion on that? Is calling best or is writing
fine? Is there any special consideration or format for writing?

Thanks,
Steve

Your plan is fine. Be sure to include a copy of the Notice, or at
least reference all the red-tape numbers and reference information in the
notice.
