Now, you're taxing my patience! (Couldn't resist the pun.) ;-)

That is good. A year and so backwards, sometimes my posts took three or
more months to get to Baltimore.

Of course with more timely posts, some of us might have a tendency to
engage in off topic discourse, e.g. Cubs, beer, Australia, whisky.....
but through every message should run a tax thread and be tax related.

So if any message contains the word "tax" it should pass through,
however if it contains a word like... oh.. "p.n.s" , something similar,
it should not. Unless we are retelling the old joke about the only
thing left that isn't yet taxed!

As an aside, I once discovered how to set up filters to send certain
objectionable spam messages directly into the trash file. So one day
my sister calls me on the phone to ask why I hadn't responded to her
email. Turns out she had used the word "erect" therein.
Yes, her message was a tax question concerning building certain statues/
monuments on her and husband's golf course.

Well, I'm in Columbus OH but read & post to this NG via panix, a NYC
ISP.

I remember around 35 years ago when the Old Bell System (rip) used
strict hierarchical routing of toll calls, and Monday 9am-11am call
traffic would overflow the White Plains - Phila - DC Regional switching
points, that is was routine for White Plains to switch via Scaramento
and Phila to switch via San Bernadino (There were 10 US regions and
two Canadian ones) during those hours, when it was 6-8am in Calif.

So a good chunk of curcuit-switched traffic from NY to DC travelled
to California and back, and avoided any need to expand the pipelines.

Once DNHR (Direct NonHeirarchical Routing) began to take over in
the early 80s, routing was less predictable. And with expanded IP
addressing and glass pipes, bandwidth is not much of an issue.

Just a point on the traffic flow (nothing to do with D. Stussy's point,
but traffic flow in general).

Before robo, when the latency from posting to seeing ones post could be
12-24 hours (or more at times - depending on beer judging schedules),
and then an equal time to receive a response, one tended to be very
sparse and conservative with their postings.

With robo, when posting time to response time is measured in minutes
instead of days, the group tends to become much more wordy and to engage
in much more give and take.

Is that good or bad? I am not sure myself. While I enjoy the more open
dialog, I miss the tighter control that kept the dialog more on topic
and professional.

What's also interesting is the traffic flow. Our moderation point is in the
greater Boston area. Sometimes articles take a direct route (from east to
west coasts) in just a few hops. I've also noted some of the articles on
here pinballing around Europe before finding their way back to the U.S. I
think that this is due to the NNTP peering connections of our moderation
point.

Thank you for your concern.

Now that my consumption of pain killers has decreased
sharply, I am practicing less. Less, but not that
much less.

As for robo-moderation, I do miss not reading each
and every submission and commenting on a few. But
it is highly unlikely that we will go back to batch
processing.
