Whether you have to file a federal tax return depends not only on your total income, but also on your filing status, age, whether or not you are a dependent, the type of income you have, and other factors. See "Do You Have To File?" on pages 6 & 7 of the IRS instructions for Form 1040, or "Who Must File" on pages 2 - 4 of IRS Publication 501.
