Thank you very much for your help in advance. Using the label will speed up and increase the accuracy of the entity update, the check digits on the label help to validate the accurate transcription of your SSN. For those folks where no changes are required, a ~SHORT~ input is done. Primary ssn & check digits found on the label. The situation you describe requires a ~Partial~ entity update, where a minor typographical change to the primary filers name (First or middle initial or addition of the Spousal name line) are required. Use the label, to the right of your surname, write in Wife's first & last name. When the editor reviews your document they will code it to instruct the transcriber how to input your changes. For those folks who's address has changed but names are correct, using the label again improves quality & speed of transcription, the ~INTERMEDIATE~ change is ordered by the editor, the transcriptionist input's your ssn check digits & new address information. A ~FULL~ update is required when the label is not used and the search data input does not match master index on names & Address (NAP), the primary & secondary SSN, first few numeric digits & alpha characters of the street address and zip code does not match. this is usually done with first time filers, who would not have a label. -- << ------------------------------------------------------- > << The foregoing was not intended or written to be used, > << nor can it used, for the purpose of avoiding penalties > << that may be imposed upon the taxpayer. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting posts > << to this newsgroup as well as our anti-spamming policy > << are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2007) - All rights reserved. > << ------------------------------------------------------- > |

| I got married in 2007 and plan to file a 2007 joint return. The mailing label on my 2007 1040 booklet has only my name on it. According to the 1040 form instructions, IRS says we should use the mailing label, and if there are changes, we can cross out the incorrect information and and write in the changes. In our particular case, there is no change on my name (primary filer), but I need to put my wife's name and social security number on the form. Can I still use the mailing label and write her name in the blank space below the address? If so, should I also put her SSN on the mailing label, or should I put her SSN on the form itself but write her name on the mailing label? I think the mailing label is large enough to cover the entire space that contains the filer and spouse names and address, but maybe not the space for our SSNs. Or is it easier that I just write our names, SSNs and address directly on the form and discard the mailing label?. I know this maybe just a simple question, but I just want to make sure that my wife's name and SSN are properly displayed so there won't be any questions. Thank you very much for your help in advance.
