Most software I've seen allows you to input the interest and mark or code it
as income from a federal obligation.

Double check the input screens to see if this option is available (it should
be). Then correct the data input problem.

I use Tax Cut and state tax exempt interests (e.g. T-Bill interests)
are entered separately and do not get carried over to the state
forms. Something to be said about getting what you paid for.

Default tax software bug

i am using free software called 1040 now it does fed and for a fee does
state--takes data from fed and inserts it into state
however there is no wy to modify state data--it is taking non state taxable
interest and inserting it into state software--ther is no way to modify the
state data'
using cpa taxs from last year found the same problem--
same for data done by accounting firm in new york city.
sofar have not been able to get response--on-line help from software.

anyone out there had the same problem of inability to modify state data ?

any experience with things like turbo tax fed/state taxware is appreciated.
