I second that suggestion, and have previously mentioned it
Dick. For example, misc.invest.financial-plan has a "fast
approval" process and co-moderators (including past m.t.m.
contributor Ed Zollars) that seems to work very well and
dramatically cuts down on turn-around time.

While it is sometimes instructive to see multiple
independent replies to a question, I often wonder if people
would save some precious time if they could see that the
answer they are about to give has already been given.

As far as I can determine, the software used is STUMP
Robomoderator Program (www.algebra.com/~ichudov/stump/) and
dozens if not hundreds of Usenet groups appear to use it
successfully.

It is Unix-based (which Dick and I are both fans of!) and
uses to PGP to help prevent spoofing, which I know is a
concern.

I think the current setup is just fine. I can even deal
with the current political leanings <VERY BIG grin> .

"current political leanings"? You can discuss political
issues related to taxes. You can verbally assault Congress
as a whole, but not any politico. Not even ... ....!

Oh, one other thing.

You might think of looking into borrowing the software used
by uk.legal.moderated. It creates a whitelist of people who
are pre- approved, but scans them for target words or
phrased that might not be appropriate and sends those posts
for moderation.

It also allows for multiple moderators, cutting down on the
time required of any single person. And with several hands,
it cuts down on the time any indivdual post waits before
being moderated.

It may have other features that I'm unaware of or can't
think of at the moment.

Personally I prefer usenet to a web-based forum, since it's
faster and more reliable.

On the other hand I've seen forums on private news servers
that can be simultaneously accessed via the web.

Is Usenet "the box"? Are we talking about shutting down the
newsgroup and moving to a web-based forum?

It has long been my opinion that USENET is necessary to
maintain public access. But nothing is written in stone.

"Think outside the box" means I need ideas!

Default Moderator: Going to Richmond

I am leaving for Richmond in about two hours to judge at
the Dominion Cup beer competition and will return tomorrow
evening (Saturday, 14 July 2007).

After talking about it for several years, I am going to
Australia - 28 November 2007 through 13 December 2007)!

Also there are massive changes being planned for mtm before
I leave for OZ. Any and all constructive ideas will be
appreciated. Think outside the box!
