I'm sure as far as they're concerned, it's exactly as if you
bounced a check.

My advice: Pay the $84, chalk it up to experience, and learn
to double- and triple-check those numbers, in the future.

Just be thankful you didn't hit a _real_ account for that
money, and then maybe you'd be chargeable for embezzlement?

Default Penalty for mistake with bank acct number - forgiveness possible?

I did my 2005 California tax through CA Franchise Tax
Board's website. I owed about $900, so I entered my checking
account routing & account number into their website to pay
it. I thought everything went through fine, but I just got a
notice from the CA Franchise Tax Board saying I owe $84
penalty because the payment did not go through. I checked
the printout from when I entered my info on their website,
and I realized that I made a typo when I entered my bank
account number. The $84 penalty seems a bit excessive, given
that it was just an honest mistake. I've been calling
Franchise Tax Board's 800 number but cannot get through to a
live person. Am I just stuck with paying this penalty? Or is
there a chance they might forgive it somehow? How can I have
this penalty waived?

Thanks.
