You cannot file electronically if you file MFS in a
community property state.

Your e-file software should automatically include an
"Allocation Record" like the one depicted on page B-203 (pdf
page 317) of IRS Publication 1345A. The Allocation Record
will enable IRS to reconcile the income reported on the
various information returns, i.e., Forms W-2 and 1099.

Default Electronic filing possible for married filing separately in community property state?

I believe it may be beneficial for my wife and I to file
separately. We live in California, a community property
state. According to the IRS publication we have to submit a
schedule with our tax return that details the allocation of
our incomes to the individual returns.

I guess the need for this schedule prohibits us from filing
electronically (with Turbotax)??? Or is there a workaround
that still allows me to file electronically?

Also wondering anyway how IRS is going to work their way
through all these mismatches in W2's and 1099-MISC and
individually reported incomes in the first place...

Thanks,
Etienne
