Not exactly sure what you are referring to as a special
dividend. I'll speculate that it may be a stock dividend.
That is a dividend only paid in shares of stock. If that is
the case, you have to adjust your basis accordingly.

Your CPA/tax advisor should be able to help you with these
calcualtions.

Default special dividend given as stocks

I would appreciate any information on the following
situation. I have owned shares of a company for 10 years.
In the past 5 years, the company has paid quarterly
dividends, along with a special yearly dividend of company
stock. My question is: I have sold all shares, and would
like to know how to incorporate the special dividend when I
figure out the capital gain on this stock.
