Another answered the casualty loss deduction, but I'd question that if it were really storm-caused structural damage that insurance shouldn't have taken up a larger chunk of it. Unless, of course, you were either un- (which doesn't seem right as mentioned deductible) or under- insured. Unless understand reason for any claim being refused and comfortable with the reason(s) therefore, would seem worth pursuing. << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing was not intended or written to be used, > << nor can it used, for the purpose of avoiding penalties > << that may be imposed upon the taxpayer. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting posts > << to this newsgroup as well as our anti-spamming policy > << are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2006) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |

Casualty losses are a Schedule A itemized deduction. If you're in a federal disaster area, also see Publication 547. -- Phil Marti Clarksburg, MD << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing was not intended or written to be used, > << nor can it used, for the purpose of avoiding penalties > << that may be imposed upon the taxpayer. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting posts > << to this newsgroup as well as our anti-spamming policy > << are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2006) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |

| During Nov/Dec ice storm my sun room sustained major damage. My associations inspector failed the roof and siding. Structural damage was found and the sun room and a storage room below it had to be taken down. It was replaced by a deck and storage room. My insurance covered none of it except one shingle, which was below my deductible. Will I be able to claim any of this on my taxes? << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing was not intended or written to be used, > << nor can it used, for the purpose of avoiding penalties > << that may be imposed upon the taxpayer. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting posts > << to this newsgroup as well as our anti-spamming policy > << are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2006) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |
