I did make photos of my stuff I did as well on a second donation from my kids later in the year, but it was no where near as much as my mother who had passed away. That, along with your list and a charity receipt is all that's necessary. The "good used or better" test was added sometime during> photograph, or the charity itself indicates on the receipt > that the clothes were in 'good' condition. 2006, so depending on when the donation was made it may not even matter. Even if the new test applies, I don't see a problem in your case. Contrast used clothing of a decedent to a thrift shop with worn out bedding and towels donated to the humane shelter. Both are worthy donations, but you don't get a deduction for the latter. -- Phil Marti Clarksburg, MD << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing was not intended or written to be used, > << nor can it used, for the purpose of avoiding penalties > << that may be imposed upon the taxpayer. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting posts > << to this newsgroup as well as our anti-spamming policy > << are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2006) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |

| My sister donated a number of clothes that belonged to our mother who passed away to the local hospital thrift shop. They were all certainly in 'good' condition. We have the receipt indicating that we made a donation, but it doesn't state how much and - just a generic preprinted statement saying "household items or clothing'). But of course, I do have a list that we wrote so we could inventory what we gave. My question - is this sufficient for the donation deduction? I recently read in the paper we should either have a photograph, or the charity itself indicates on the receipt that the clothes were in 'good' condition. I had planned to use the IT'S DEDUCTIBLE function within Turbo Tax to assign the valuation to the list I have of pants, shirts, etc. Regards - - Andrew << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing was not intended or written to be used, > << nor can it used, for the purpose of avoiding penalties > << that may be imposed upon the taxpayer. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting posts > << to this newsgroup as well as our anti-spamming policy > << are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2006) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |
