Good! It should, because filing W2's online with SSA means
having to type each and every one into their (free) system.
For 1 or 2, maybe even three W2's it can be worth the (no)
cost. But for a client with many employees, it is not.
For those I print out W2 forms the old fashioned way, on
forms I buy from Office Depot.

Of course I could buy commercial software each year to do
W2's, and this would be automatic and seamless efiling, but
with my old software I wrote maybe twenty years ago and
updated when necessary (not necessary in recent years) my
cost is very low.

And I had registered back in December, thinking to try this
SSA free service again after several years. On Dec 29th I
did file two W2 forms for a client successfully. Several
days ago I signed on again to file some for another client
and was informed that my password didn't match. Of course I
was stubborn and tried two more times, so am locked out of
the system.

I doubt that I will ever try again.

The SSA does not exactly have a stellar record of preventing
their computer systems from mangling data. See
<http://www.mit.edu/~jik/ssa-zip.html> for my (unsuccessful)
efforts to try to get them to admit that their computers
replace valid mailing addresses with invalid ones when
mailing out social security cards. They wouldn't even admit
that there's a problem, let alone fix it.

Default SSA database mangles on-line W2 forms

I completed my single W-2 and corresponding W-3 today at
www.ssa.gov. When I logged in my company name and address
were presented correctly. However, when I started the
process of completing the on-line Form W-2 I noticed that
both parts of my city name had been entered incorrectly on
the W-2. In the first word of the city name two letters had
been replaced by one and in the second word of the city name
an L had been changed to an I.

It was easy to correct these errors before proceeding, but I
am always concerned when a computer database does not
correctly transfer data from one form to another. It makes
me wonder what other data may not transfer correctly.

I called SSA customer service. They had not heard about
this problem but the agent did say she would pass the
information on to their technical staff.
