However, not all people may avail themselves of our own practitioners' hotline. Only those who are in practice and have a POA on file may obtain information. The average taxpayer may not. Many of us in this newgroups are in fact active practitioners, but some like Dick Adams, our esteemed moderator, are not. You can request an IRP transcript (Information Returns> down. Someone called me today and asked me how to get a > transcript and I gave them a attorney type answer of "I'll > get back to you on that." Processing--this shows the data reported by payers on forms such as W-2, 1099, 1098, 5498, etc.) by calling the Practiitoner Hotline. There are other transcripts available which show some or all of the IRS's/TP's activity on a certain account for a certain year. I'm an EA whose just completed the first year of the NTPI training in DC and am excited to know the answer to a question on here. So if he is a non filer, then this option is out. Just the other day I wanted to verify that a client had filed a return for 2004 when she went "elsewhere" - she'll never do that again, btw. With her sitting there it took me all of eight minutes to input the POA which was recorded instantly with Memphis CAF, and which she signed for my records of course, and get the transcript which confirmed her filing and by deduction the fact that she paid 198$ "elsewhere" for the quick bucks. If they are a practitioner, they can call (866) 860-4259 or> down. Someone called me today and asked me how to get a > transcript and I gave them a attorney type answer of "I'll > get back to you on that." get it electronically on the IRS website, if they qualify. A taxpayer can complete form 4506 or call (800) 829-8815. Maybe a client can get it at the IRS site. I am not sure. << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing was not intended or written to be used, > << nor can it used, for the purpose of avoiding penalties > << that may be imposed upon the taxpayer. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting posts > << to this newsgroup as well as our anti-spamming policy > << are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2006) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |

How to Get a Copy of Your Tax Return Information?> I know I've asked this before. This time I will write it > down. Someone called me today and asked me how to get a > transcript and I gave them a attorney type answer of "I'll > get back to you on that." IRS TAX TIP 2006-12 There are two easy and convenient options for obtaining copies of your federal tax return information - tax return transcripts and tax account transcripts - by phone or by mail. A tax return transcript shows most line items from the tax return (Form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ) as it was originally filed, including any accompanying forms and schedules. It does not reflect any changes you, your representative or the IRS made after the return was filed. In many cases, a return transcript will meet the requirements of lending institutions such as those offering mortgages and student loans. A tax account transcript shows any later adjustments either you or the IRS made after the tax return was filed. This transcript shows basic data, including marital status, type of return filed, adjusted gross income and taxable income. The IRS does not charge a fee for transcripts, which are available for the current and three prior calendar years. Allow two weeks for delivery. To request either transcript: .. Phone: Call 1-800-829-1040 and follow the prompts in the recorded message .. Mail: Complete IRS Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return. If you need a photocopy of a previously processed tax return and attachments, complete Form 4506, Request for Copy of Tax Form, and mail it to the IRS address listed on the form for your area. There is a fee of $39.00 for each tax period requested. Copies are generally available for the current and past 6 years. Forms 4506-T and 4506 can be found on the IRS Web site at IRS.gov or by calling the IRS forms and publications order line at 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676).
