Plus the fact that you'll probably get your bonus.

Yes, I know, and you should know by now, that bonuses for
employees are includible in wages. Most employers know this,
but some do not, or choose to ignore it. If the latter is the
case, then he might just say "No W9 form! No bonus." And
there's no way in heck will he be required to pay you.

But if he won't treat the bonus as wages (after you request
it), don't make a fuss, just take the money and put aside
maybe 1/4 of it for taxes next February.

"Purpose of Form
A person who is required to file an information return with
the IRS, must obtain your correct taxpayer identification
number (TIN) to report, for example, income paid to you,
real estate transactions, mortgage interest you paid,
acquisition or abandonment of secured property, cancellation
of debt, or contributions you made to an IRA."

In short, it's a form for the same info except for non-wages
forms of income.

Looks like your employer chose the route of requesting
(probably duplicate) information from you via the W-9 route
rather than ferreting the same information out of their
existing records. It's just an example of bureaucracy in
action...while as you note there's no doubt they already
have the information in their possession, it'll make things
smoother if you just cooperate.

I see no need for you to file this form, as you are already
an employee with this payor. Your salary and bonuses should
already be covered by the W-4 form on file. The only thing
that occurs to me is that this employer is planning to pay
and report this bonus on a 1099-MISC form, which is totally
incorrect for an employee. The bonus amount should be
included on your annual W-2 form.

It sounds like they're about to mess up the reporting of and
withholding from your bonus. Employees don't give W-9's to
their employers.I'd ask them what's going on.

Default What is form W-9

Hello all,

I recieved from my employer the other day a Form W-9 Request
for Taxpayer ID and certification.

I should be due for a bonus sometime the end of this month,
and this form was in with the other paperwork... what
exactly would they need this form for? I've already filled
out W-2 or whathave you when I started working there.

Thanks,
Shhhh
