Yes, I know, and you should know by now, that bonuses for employees are includible in wages. Most employers know this, but some do not, or choose to ignore it. If the latter is the case, then he might just say "No W9 form! No bonus." And there's no way in heck will he be required to pay you. But if he won't treat the bonus as wages (after you request it), don't make a fuss, just take the money and put aside maybe 1/4 of it for taxes next February. In short, it's a form for the same info except for non-wages forms of income. Looks like your employer chose the route of requesting (probably duplicate) information from you via the W-9 route rather than ferreting the same information out of their existing records. It's just an example of bureaucracy in action...while as you note there's no doubt they already have the information in their possession, it'll make things smoother if you just cooperate. << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing was not intended or written to be used, > << nor can it used, for the purpose of avoiding penalties > << that may be imposed upon the taxpayer. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2006) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |

I see no need for you to file this form, as you are already> for Taxpayer ID and certification. > I should be due for a bonus sometime the end of this month, > and this form was in with the other paperwork... what > exactly would they need this form for? The only thing that occurs to me is that this employer is planning to pay and report this bonus on a 1099-MISC form, which is totally incorrect for an employee. The bonus amount should be included on your annual W-2 form.

Employees don't give W-9's to their employers.I'd ask them what's going on. -- Phil Marti Clarksburg, MD << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing was not intended or written to be used, > << nor can it used, for the purpose of avoiding penalties > << that may be imposed upon the taxpayer. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2006) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |
