I have since found that I can file an amended Form 940 and assign the extra payment for 2005, which was made in January of 2006, against the total due for 2006. -- Vic Roberts Replace xxx with vdr in e-mail address. << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing is intended for educational purposes only > << and does NOT constitute legal OR professional advice. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2006) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |

They are pretty helpful. Let them check your payments and see what they show as your balance due/overpayment. You can then discuss whether they should refund it or credit it to 2006. | In both 2004 and 2005 companies in New York had to pay an extra $12 FUTA per employee. It is my understanding that this charge was imposed because New York pay the balance of a loan received from the Federal government to pay state unemployment obligations. The information I have is that this extra charge will disappear in 2006. I paid the full FUTA payment for 2005 on December 31, 2005. However I just realized that near the end of January 2006 I thought I had not paid the additional $21 so I paid it again. Both payments were made by EFTPS, both were marked as payments for TY 2005 and both were accepted. Is the extra $21 lost? Can I take a credit for that payment against my 2006 FUTA payment? I have only one employee, me, so the mistake is not a big deal. But I'm still curious.
