Thanks (this and all similar replies). I must have missed
it - because I actually got everyone done by April 14th, so
I had the weekend off too! This past season, I never
touched an extension form. ;-)

How slack. Next they'll go to only requiring filing every
two years.

It's not talk, it's the law as of the 2005 tax year. There
is a single, automatic, six-month extension which is
obtained by filing Form 4868.

Already happened. Federal income tax return extensions are
automatic 6 months now.

October 15th. If the forms give you a headache, you might
want to consider hiring a tax professional. A good tax
person can save you more money than they cost you.

It's not just talk, Dieter. It's a done deal. See the very
first paragraph of the Form 4868 instructions for 2005.

There has been more than talk. The change took effect this
year. Form 4868 now provides a single automatic extension to
October 15 (October 16 this year because the 15th is a
Sunday).

Take a look at the current Form 4868 -- it's much more than
talk, it's been done. A 4868 grants an automatic extension
out through October.

Old information. The 2005 extension deadline is October 16,
2006 (six months after the due date of April 15, 2006).
There is no second or further extension available.

No, it's October 16 (the 15th is a Sunday). The IRS has
gotten rid of the two-stage extension.

You're behind on the news.

August 15.

There has been talk at the federal level of making a single
extension instead of the two-extension system we have now.
Some states have only the single extension system (to
October 15).

October 16, 2006, since 10/15 is on a Sunday. This is not
the next deadline, it's the last deadline. No need to wait,
though.

Default when is the deadline after filing 4868

Scoured through the IRS website to find out when the next
deadline is for me. I filed for an extension using the 4868.

This is a very simple question, but the IRS documents give me
a headache. My guess is 6/15, but is that right? The
documents say something about the date applying to those
living outside the States.

So a very simple question. I filed for an extension. Now
when is my deadline?
