An annuity, > variable, fixed or indexed, will work for this. turnover and low dividents may throw off less than one percent annual taxable income. The rest of gain would be long term capital gain. Sometimes real estate works too, but you haver to be careful about annual property taxes 1%-3% or more. I also notice some of the big mutual fund house have gotten in the VA game. Used to be that VAs might have 2% insurance and maintenance charges wrapping mutual funds with 2% overhead for a 4% total overhead. Plus an early sales penalty up to seven percent to sell the VA in less than seven years. Fidelity has some VAs with 0.4% total overhead, no sales penalty, and several dozen mutual fund choices. They do prohibit day-trading internal funds by limiting trades to one or two a month. << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing is intended for educational purposes only > << and does NOT constitute legal OR professional advice. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2006) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |

As a point of clarity for the OP and lurkers in general -> bulk sum into an IRA or some other retirement account? I > suspect it's not doable but would like to ask for advice. because of the intricacies of the tax laws it is usually best to ask a question relating to what you want to accomplish rather than asking a specific logistical question. For example, you ask about transferring a substantial amount of nonqualified money into an IRA or other retirement account. The answer this is generally a resounding no, except for the normal allowable contributions. However, if your real question is more like "is there a place where I can park a sum of nonqualified money so that it will grow tax deferred, where I can similar benefits as IF it were an IRA, and where there are NO limits on how much money I can put in?" then the answer is YES! An annuity, variable, fixed or indexed, will work for this. The questions may sound similar, but there are differences. This is also why responses will frequently include extrapolations of the original question or assume facts not in evidence. Gene E.
