Default Re: Form letter question

"what are they looking for?"

Nothing. It is a form letter automatically generated by the
IRS' computer.

"Does filing Form 5329 increase the chances of an audit? "

No.

"And I actually received duplicates of the form letter dated
4 days later, so now I'm wondering if that means my info was
input twice into the system. "

No. You got two form letters because you made two payments
with Form 5329 for 2003 and 2004. Carefully check the two
form letters in the upper right hand corner or in the middle
about 3 inches from the top, one should show the tax period
as December 31, 2003 and the other should show the tax
period as December 31, 2004.

"s it typical or usual for this form letter to be sent out
upon the filing of Form 5329?"

Its typical for most any letter or loose form/schedule you
send to the IRS.

That did occur to me. And I actually received duplicates of
the form letter dated 4 days later, so now I'm wondering if
that means my info was input twice into the system. But
maybe that's a good thing and they'll refund my money as an
overpayment ;-)

The next question is, is it typical or usual for this form
letter to be sent out upon the filing of Form 5329?

Thanks, Dee

Not necessarily. Anything the IRS sees internally can
trigger an audit, but they prefer to select returns for
examination in a more controlled manner to identify those
with the highest potential for change.

This may simply be a computer-generated letter which doesn't
make any sense in context of something sent to IRS.
Occasionally happens.

Default Form letter question

I recently discovered that the minimum distribution
requirements were not being met for my IRA for 2003, 2004,
and 2005. I included the 50% penalty on my 2005 1040, and
then filed Form 5329 for 2003 and 2004 and paid those
penalties.

My checks for 2003 and 2004 were cashed 3 weeks ago, and
then yesterday I received form letters from the IRS thanking
me for my "correspondence" and that they would be looking
into the matter and advise me of their findings within 45
days.

My question is, what are they looking for? Is it just to
determine that the income that I should have received from
the IRA didn't force me into the next higher tax bracket and
that I don't owe them more money? Does filing Form 5329
increase the chances of an audit?

Thanks, Dee
