Unless you have other business related miles, just put down
a number that represents the non-rental / business miles.

The program will only deduct the miles for that business.
It ignores the non-deductible commuting or personal miles.

The questions on usage/mileage per activity are related to
the vehicle employed in the travel. Presumably, the vehicle
you used to visit your rental property was also used for
other purposes. Could one of them have sometimes been to
"commute" to your main job?

I wouldn't sweat it. If you truly never used that vehicle
for commuting purposes, answer "0" and ignore the error
message (if the program allows it). If not, throw in a
fictional number to represent "some" commuting use
("commuting to the theater?), and move on.

The actual miles for each activity aren't the vital issue;
the existence of a log or written record _is_.

Default Auto expenses for rental property

I am using TurboTax to deduct mileage for tending to a
residential rental property. The program uses the same
worksheet as for work related auto expenses and gives an
error message if non-deductable commuting miles are not
included. Is it not true that "commuting" only applies to
your "main" job (which for me this is not)? Should I just
enter zero and ignore the error?

Thanks,
Kenn
