Presumably, the vehicle you used to visit your rental property was also used for other purposes. Could one of them have sometimes been to "commute" to your main job? I wouldn't sweat it. If you truly never used that vehicle for commuting purposes, answer "0" and ignore the error message (if the program allows it). If not, throw in a fictional number to represent "some" commuting use ("commuting to the theater?), and move on. The actual miles for each activity aren't the vital issue; the existence of a log or written record _is_. | I am using TurboTax to deduct mileage for tending to a residential rental property. The program uses the same worksheet as for work related auto expenses and gives an error message if non-deductable commuting miles are not included. Is it not true that "commuting" only applies to your "main" job (which for me this is not)? Should I just enter zero and ignore the error?
