The District does not tax the earnings of nonresidents from
services performed inside the District (it is prevented from
imposing such a "commuter tax" by provisions of the Home
Rule Act). So if you live in one of the contiguous states
and commute to work, you will be a taxpayer only in the
state where you live.

Based on a very cursory review, it appears to me that from
an income tax perspective you might be a little better off
in MD than in DC or VA. However, there are other matters to
take into consideration, such as living expenses, sales and
use taxes, commuting expenses, etc. If Dick doesn't see an
advantage to being in MD, I'm inclined to doubt that there
is one.

Default DC resident with nonresident spouse

I plan to work in Washington, DC for several years while my
spouse remains in Utah. We file federal returns MFJ. Does
someone know how my state taxes will work if I live in DC,
or if there is a tax advantage depending on whether I live
in DC, Maryland, or Virginia?

I am a Tarheel living in Maryland and I have yet to see a
tax advantage here. Also be aware traffic problems and
waht passes for a public transportation other than the DC
Metro.
