| Congrats on getting the case resolved, and on finally getting someone at the IRS to help. They are the exception rather than the rule. The paperwork you sent in may or may not have been lost. When the IRS gets more work than they can handle, they resort to throwing away letters from taxpayers. That way, they can claim they never got a response and close the case. They can then show that they are working and closing alot of cases, thereby pleasing Congress, and ask for more money to catch those bad taxpayers. I saw this happen on many ocassions in my 20 years at the IRS in Austin TX. | Some of you may perhaps recall some postings from last fall, about W-7's in limbo on a 004 2return for someone with Canadian-resident dependents. After several rounds with the taxpayer advocate office and TWO MORE sets of notarized documents (BOTH lost by the mailroom in Philadelphia!!), and finally faxing over my _copies_ of the notarized documents, we got the ITIN problem resolved. My client got his 2004 refund issued on 4/21/06. We extended him for 2005 (since we didn't get the ITIN's until April 6th, and that was just by phone). Thankfully, the very helpful gentleman at the Taxpayer Advocate office was _finally_ able to get this resolved. The only other way I could have seen to do it would have been to carry documents to Philadelphia and walk them through myself! So, if anyone else runs into a similar problem, I know the guy at the TA office to talk to....
