There is no need for a revised 1040. All the necessary
information is self-contained in the amended return.

1040X amended return on paper

You can claim the dependent by filing an amended tax return
on Form 1040X.

I don't think you can file the 1040X electronically so you
will need to mail it in. However, if your original return
showed that you overpaid, then wait to file the 1040X until
after you received the refund.

Use Form 1040-X.

During training for 2005 tax prep, TaxAide volunteers were
advised to _only_ file 1040-X on paper. You will have to
provide a copy of your modified 1040 (both page 1 and 2) to
reflect the dependent information and the revised exemption
deductions and calculations of tax due. Just attach them to
the 1040-X.

Of course, you will refer to the revisions when filling out
1040-X, since you should explain each change by reference to
the line where figures have been revised. (This should be
done in part 2.)

You can amend your return on Form 1040X. However all amended
returns must be filed on paper.

Yes, Form 1040X by paper and you have until 4-15-09 to do
it. The IRS can't accept e-filed 1040X's yet. They keep
saying "someday".

Default refiling a revised federal return

I e-filed my federal return and it has been accepted. Then I
realized that I did not enter a dependent and want to refile
the return with this correction. Is there anyway to do this
- electronically or paper return?
