Paper file Form 1040X. You'll need to attach Schedule A
(because that changed), and it wouldn't hurt to attach the
1040 itself (with corrections).

Sales tax plus the car sales tax goes on Schedule A form
1040. To amend file Form 1040X and include the schedule A
with the 1040X.

File form 1040-X, with a revised Schedule A including the
additional deduction.

You can file a 1040-X, to amend your original return.
Assuming you itemized -- using Schedule A -- on your first
return, it should be easy to revise the "taxes paid" section
to reflect the additional sales tax deductions. You can
then reflect those changes in column 3 of the 1040-X, note
why the numbers have changed on the back (page 2), and
attach a copy of the revised Schedule A.

If you did not itemize with your original return, be sure to
calculate the overall effect of switching to make certain it
would pay. Unless you have real estate taxes and mortgage
interest, the standard deduction is usually preferable.

You can deduct sales tax only if you itemize deductions on
Schedule A. If you do, attach a revised Schedule A to Form
1040X to amend your return.

Default Amend for omitted deduction

I filed my federal tax return (Texas resident) and forgot to
take the sales tax deduction - I also bought a new car in
2005. What is the best procedure to now amend to claim that
sales tax?

Thanks.
