It follows Federal taxes, and the 401k money is not taxed.

Though MA does tax IRA contributions, it does NOT tax
401(k) contributions. Which you should be able to
easily verify by comparing the "state wages" box on the W-2
to, say, the Medicare Wages box.

Default employee 401(k) contributions subject to MA income tax?

Does anyone know whether an employee's contribution to a
401(k) (the amount listed under code D in box 12 on a W-2)
is included in wages which are subject to Massachusetts'
income tax? Or is it similar to Federal taxes and not
subject to the income tax?
