Since you have no fixed workplace, mileage to the first
customer in the metropolitan area where you do most of your
work is commuting.Travel to a second location is deductible.
Travel outside the area where you do most of your work is
also deductible.

The IRS is correct. Only the distance from House #1 to
House # 2, etc and *not* back home from the last house.

Assuming you have to transport the tools of your trade plus
supplies, such mileage is deductible. But if you merely go
to a customer's house and use their equipment and supplies,
then the answer is no, except of course between and among
various clients during the day.

Travel between your home and your place of work (first
client) is considered nondeductible "commuting", UNLESS you
have a valid home office.

Default Car Expense Deduction for Home

- I have a small residential cleaning business.
- I will be reporting income from the business on Schedule C
- I rent, and take no home office deduction or depreciation
for the business
- Can I take a deduction for my mileage to and from clients'
houses when I clean them?
- I got the impression from the IRS help line that I can
only count the mileage BETWEEN clients. So if I clean one
house and return home, there's no mileage. However if I
clean two houses, the travel between them is allowable but
no other part of that travel. I had assumed that any travel
related to conducting the business would be an expense of
the business (regardless of how many houses I cleaned).

Thank you for your help,
