I'm sorry Henry, there is only a 3 year period to claim any
refunds.

No, the Refund Statute of limitations has expired for this
year.

-BUT-

If you still have an unpaid balance of tax/penalty/interest
due on {{1040-1998}}, posting this missed credit will lower
you net balance due today., -OR- if you paid off this
hypothetical liability within the last two years, those
dollars paid in recently would be refundable.

I would say you are out of luck! The statute of limitations
on refunds of overpayments is 3 years from due date for the
return or 2 years from date of payment. Thus, the last open
year is 2002. You should have made your claim back in 2002.

Default Tax Correction Request to IRS for Prior Year Tax Error

I recently just found out that I did not enter the Excess
Social Security withheld on line 62 of my 1998 1040. Is
there any way that I could correct this with IRS and get the
over paid social security tax refunded for that year? If I
did get this amount back, what is the tax impact of 2006?

Any input would be very much appreciated.

Thanks and regards,

Henry
