They said they would issue a transport permit which would require titling in Florida within a certain amount of time. We ended up coming back to Florida and buying a car across the state line in Alabama. We took delivery at the dealership in Alabama, paid no sales tax at the time of purchase, drove the car home on a dealer's tag, took the bill of sale to our county tax collector, and paid Florida sales tax and title and tag fees. Don't know the rules in CT but I'd guess they have similar procedures. << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing is intended for educational purposes only > << and does NOT constitute legal OR professional advice. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2006) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |

As long as the buyer completes the appropriate paperwork and gives it to the dealer, there is no CT tax. The purchaser will pay use tax when he registers the vehicle in Florida. If you receive the car in CT, > you'll pay sales tax there. (CERT 125) saying that I didn't pay the CT tax and I would then pay the FL tax when I registered the car in FL. I would get an in-transit tag. In the meantime, I found also that if one buys a car in CT and for whatever reason the dealer decides he must charge the CT use tax, he can supply a form (AU-677) which certifies that it was paid and that FL, as well as other states, will credit it against their tax providing it's within 6 months of the sale. The amount happens to be the same in FL as it is in CT. I confirmed this with the FL tax people.

| Don't know how this would work in CT, but I bought a car in AZ and had it transported to NM, where I reside. The car dealer filled out a form certifying that the car was being transported out of state, so I didn't have to pay sales tax in AZ. I payed the tax when I registered it in NM.

| I'm a FL resident temporarily in CT. I want to buy a new car from a dealer here in CT before I leave and have it delivered in FL. I know I will have to pay sales tax in FL when it's registered but I don't want to have to pay it in CT also. Would anyone know how this could be arranged? Or know where I can find the official CT position on this kind of transaction? << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing is intended for educational purposes only > << and does NOT constitute legal OR professional advice. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2006) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |
