Since she won't be filing a tax return (assuming her social
security was only income!) then her social security
received goes.. NO WHERE!

Neither on my favorite TaxWise (tm) program, nor on any IRS
form.

As the surviving spouse remarried, the tax return for the
decedent can only be filed as married-separate. Therefore,
the only place for the mother's SSA income as reflected in
Box 5 of her SSA-1099 is on her own final return.

Your father's tax return would reflect the SSA income in Box
5 of his SSA-1099.

Because your father remarried in the same year your mother
died, he can file jointly with his new wife. That means a
different return for your mother must be filed, using filing
status Married Filing Separately. Just include her income on
this return.

Since your father remarried, your mother's final return will
be married, filing separately. Right click on Line 20, and
Taxwise will take you to the SS worksheet.

I'm new at this but I think:

Your father would file MFJ with his new wife and they would
figure taxes using their social security on their joint return.
Your mother would file MFS and may not even need to file if she
has no or very little non-SS income.

Default soc sec and survivors

mother died in 2005 and before she died she had collected
social security. Then father remarried - also in 2005 and
both he and the new wife are on social security. Where in
Taxwise would I show mother's ss? Should I just add it to
Dad's? He had to pay back the ss for the month Mom died and
they put that on his ssa-1099 form. Not sure where I put
that amount either.
