Therefore, the only place for the mother's SSA income as reflected in Box 5 of her SSA-1099 is on her own final return. Your father's tax return would reflect the SSA income in Box 5 of his SSA-1099. << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing is intended for educational purposes only > << and does NOT constitute legal OR professional advice. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2006) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |

| Because your father remarried in the same year your mother died, he can file jointly with his new wife. That means a different return for your mother must be filed, using filing status Married Filing Separately. Just include her income on this return. Your father would file MFJ with his new wife and they would figure taxes using their social security on their joint return. Your mother would file MFS and may not even need to file if she has no or very little non-SS income.
