There was a big discussion on this issue in this group a
couple of years ago. Do a search to read all the pros and
cons.

First and foremost, she wants to take advantage of the
maximum 250$ for classroom supplies on page one.

A charitable contribution to a government instrumentality
(school district) is a distinct possibility, PROVIDED THAT
she gets a receipt from the school acknowledging same.
Otherwise, it's a miscellanous deduction (beyond the 250)
subject to the 2 % haircut.

Default 2106 vs charitable deduction for teacher

I'm wondering if I can take some of my wife's teacher
deductions and put them in the charitable deduction column
instead of the 2106 employee expense. It helps out my tax
situation due to the alternative minimum tax. Here is my
thought on this: She buys supplies to help her in her job;
i.e. markers, pencils, bulletin board materials, books,
magazines, rewards for the kids, briefcase, etc. These are
2106 deductions. She also buys supplies that the students
consume; i.e. pencils, paper, ink for our home printer,
magazines, books that stay in the classroom. I'd like to
make these a charitable deduction. She works in a city
school district that does not have the money to buy these
supplies.

Thanks in advance for the advise.

Dan
