Default Re: Unreimbursed Moving Expenses

Taxpayers can and do deduct anything they want.

The problem occurs when the taxpayer gets audited and
doesn't have any documentation to verify the deduction(s).

The deduction(s) will be disallowed, and an accuracy-related
penalty may be assessed. Also, depending on the amount and
types of deduction(s), a fraud penalty may be assessed, and
the case may even be refered to the Criminal Investigation
branch.

Questionable without any documentation of the expense.

Pub 521 allows some expenses for moving HOUSEHOLD pets. I
hardly expect that to extend to barnyard animals. Sounds
like a personal expense to me.

Why do you think that this is a "moving" expense? Deduct as
a charitable deduction on your Schedule A.

IRS Pub 521 discusses the criteria and allowed and unallowed
expenses involved in a job move. It is not carte blanche
and does not include many "relocation" expenses you might
have.

Default Unreimbursed Moving Expenses

I changed jobs this year and my wife and I moved about 600
miles to a new location. The new company reimbursed a lot
of my moving expenses, but I'd like to know if some of the
other expenses are deductible:

1) I tipped the movers a couple hundred bucks. I have no
documentation for it. Is that deductable?

2) I had a barn and a horse on my previous property. When
we moved, the horse came with us, but we had to board him at
a commercial barn for around $450 a month while looking for
a new property. In the end, we bought a house without
sufficient property for a barn, so the horse remains at an
off-site boarding facility. Can any portion of his board be
considered a moving expense (e.g. the first 30 days)? My
understanding is that charges to kennel pets are deductible.
He's certainly a pet, albeit a rather large one.

3) We've attended many churches in our new location looking
for the right one for us. We typically put $20 cash in the
collection plate each week, but we aren't yet members of any
particular congregation. Is there any problem with deducting
that money?

Thanks.
Josh
