(you didn't even mention moving expenses) I suggest you consult a professional. In this year, you might even save enough from a professional's help to pay that person's fee. I lived and practiced in Hawaii for years before becoming an expat. If you would like some references, I can give you the names of two or three of my friends. Just send me an email. Lanny K. You add Box 1 of all of your Forms W-2 together. You also> Hawaii. From January through Aug 05, I worked and was paid > in New York. Two states can be very tricky. You simply add them together and put the total on line 7 of> New York to Hawaii. From January through > Aug 05, I worked and was paid in New York. > Shortly after, I move to Hawaii and worked > from August 05 through Dec 31 05 in Hawaii. I > have W-2's from each employer who are > obviously different. How do I file for this? your 1040 (and don't forget the tax withheld for line 64), if you're filling out a paper form. Software should lead you to the correct method for your program. With TaxWise(R), we enter the W-2 info completely on an equivalent W-2. [You can imagine how tempting it was to have fun with the "teacher" -- but I resisted.] Bill << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing is intended for educational purposes only > << and does NOT constitute legal OR professional advice. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2006) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |

You add the federal withholdings together and report them on Line 64 of Form 1040. ***If you use software, this happens automatically. As for the states, you file a New York part-year return, and a Hawaii part-year return - reporting the income earned while a resident of each state. If it's all too much for you to do, go find a tax professional nearest you. -- Paul Thomas, CPA paulthomascpapc[at]bellsouth.net << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing is intended for educational purposes only > << and does NOT constitute legal OR professional advice. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2006) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |
