When the tax rate was lowered from 5.85%, there was lots of
whining from the self-styled "progressive" tax and spend
crowd. So the small band of Republicans in the state
legislature somehow managed to get a
put-your-money-where-your-mouth provision through -- you can
pay tax at 5.3%, or you can elect to pay tax at the old
5.85% rate.

Despite their whining before the rate was lowered, very few
of the tax-me-harder-and-faster crowd have elected to pay
tax at the rate they were clamoring for everyone to be
forced to pay. Go figure

5.3% for the majority of common & not so common folk

5.85%, for those who think they can afford to support the needs of the
Commonwealth at a higher rate.

It's 5.3% and 5.8%. There are occasional people who do
choose the higher rate. If they want to, that's their
business. I'm still waiting for the legislature to lower
the rate to 5%, as they were supposed to do years ago after
a binding referendum passed by a large margin.
