Well, I WAS thinking of Calvin Coolidge who actually said "I
do not choose to run."

As for old (damnyankee) Sherman, what he actually said was:
"I will not accept if nominated, and will not serve if
elected.", a phrase that since was corrupted to the one we
hear today. (see Barlett)

Harlan - I'd love to see who YOU think said this - here's a
couple of independent sites that reference my answer!

Couldn't resist checking: the amazing thing is that the
time stamps are two minutes apart.
[I might add it's an honor to be paired with you.]

Btw, I also thought to add that Mr. Brenner's disclaimer
about not residing in NY would seem to be meaningless, in
view of historical NY Senators (R. Kennedy and H. Clinton
come to mind).

Nope, that's not right either.

(really now; that damnyankee arsonist Sherman? And you got

William Tecumseh Sherman. (With Google, it's just not as
much fun to play trivia anymore.)

And if nominated, will not run.
If elected, will not serve.

I notice it is lacking both the "If nominated, I will not
run" and "If elected, I will not serve" clauses.

Thus the Moderator's comment about "sounding like a campaign
statement" has merit.

Bill :-)

Default No, It Is Not I

According to a certain newspaper (which for Harlan's sake
will remain nameless), a tax attorney named William Brenner
has entered the New York Republican party primary which will
produce an opponent for Senator Hillary Clinton in the November
election.

For the record, I hereby declare that: I am not that person;
he is not a relative; I am not a tax attorney; I do not reside
in New York; I am not running for the Senate.

Sounds like a campaign statement to me.
