Try reading the IT 203 form instructions. They make it
pretty clear.

If one spouse is a NY resident and the other a nonresident,
the resident spouse must file IT 201 as married filing
separately.

Col. B of the IT 360.1 would include all of the income you
earned during the part of the year when you were a NYC
resident. If you worked at the same employment all year,
you would prorate by the days, weeks, or months. If you
changed jobs when you moved out of the city, you would
report to the city only what you earned while you were
living in the city.

Default nys and nyc residency

My wife is in the Coast Guard, she resides in MA, I reside
in NY state. I lived in NYC for 5 months and have lived
upstate NY for 7 months of 2005. My wife and I are filing
jointly on our federal tax forms. Since my wife is not a nys
resident do I file IT 201 or 203, jointly or married filing
separate? On 360.1i, what formula do i use to fill in
columnB (amount of column A for NYC resident period)?
