I am not a fan of Intuit, but you really can't expect them
to guarantee that the user entered his own data correctly or
properly understood the tax law --- except that is what
they imply in their TV adds :-)

i wonder if the customer service line can tell a person how
many times intuit has been sued by users over its turbotax
software (caustic humor)

Echoing what others have said, you should engage the
services of a professional. Preparing the tax return is only
one part of the equation. You need sound business advice and
tax planning to keep you on the proper game plan.

Don't be penny wise and pound foolish. I don;t care how easy
they make turbo tax, etc., there is no substitute for a
professional's guidance and expertise.

I am in a similar position.. one fulltime job, one rental,
wife works 1099

I would not recommend taxcut etc... because it doesn't help
you understand things and then you can make decisions that
are not tax wise during the year... Use an accountant for a
few years to get to understand it...

If he's been doing it by hand until now, it doesn't seem
like he considers it too complicated. He just doesn't know
if a particular application includes all the forms he's used
to filling in.

Correct answer !

I think the guarantee that those guys brag about says that
they guarantee "the calculations" are correct.

Of course that means if you didn't enter it correctly, you
are SOOL.

Intuit has a Customer Service website to answer such
software-specific questions. You are paying for it, so use
it.

I respectfully suggest that if you have a return that is so
complicated that you don't know whether a particular
software package can handle it then you should engage the
services of a local tax professional (CPA or EA) who
specialties include small business taxation.

Good luck.

You could try turbo tax online (Premier edition) and see
what it offers -- you do not pay until you actually print or
e-file your return. I think your case should be handled just
fine.

Don't use paper! Turbotax and other online programs like
Taxcut and Taxact can handle sole proprietorships and rental
property. If you have not used online tax services be sure
to answer all the questions and check your return before
filing electronically.

It shouldn't be too much for the software, but is it too
much for you?

If you have been doing these returns for years on paper, you
know what you are doing and should be able to do the return
on software without any problems.

On the other hand, if you are new to these forms and
schedules, maybe use a tax pro this year.

I have a full-time day job plus a part-time
sole-proprietorship internet business and one property for
rent. Is this too much for turbotax online? Should I just
file by paper?
