She should do more than investigate, she should amend the
open years. Anything before 2002 is lost, and the deadline
for amending 2002 is 4/17/2006.

Information about the deduction is in Publication 970. For
each tax year she'll need a separate Form 1040X. (It has
separate instructions, but one copy of that will do.)
She'll also need to get the 1040 instructions for each year,
both for the tax tables and that year's rules on the
deduction.

Forms and pubs are available at www.irs.gov

Default student loans

My wife had for several years filed 1040-EZ without
itemizing her student laon interest which ran about $2000
per year for several years with her income at between
$30,000 and $36,000. Should she investigate the possiblity
that she could file those years again?

She was single with no dependents. We were just married last year.

Thanks! Brian
