Things have gotten SO bad....

SO bad, that Leroy and Loretta Lockhorn just today were at
IRS office to get tax forms and since Leroy can't decide
which to take, Loretta advises to take the short form, based
on how much money he makes. (for full flavor, see your
local comic page in newspaper.)

I've filled using TaxCut several years. The IRS sends me
nada.

They haven't sent me the Trust forms and booklet for years,
even though I never used a program or e-filed, and despite
the fact that for about 5 years I called them and asked to
start receiving this needed information, and was assured I
would. I gave up on this, as well as many other things . .
...

Not to mention how many pretty common forms are left out of
the booklets. Or their poor instructions and index - the
index includes, of course, "income", but "deduction" is
nowhere to be found.

www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040.pdf (and it's 142 pages long).

Umm, yes they are. (That's where I got the i1040.pdf that's
sitting on my computer right now.)

You mean http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040gi.pdf which
is the instructions for the basic 1040 or
http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040.pdf which is the 1040
instruction book including Schedules A, B, C, D, etc?

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040.pdf seems to be what
you are looking for? That's 142 PDF pages, which comes out
to 71 double-sided, which I imagine is what you meant.

Really, after reading your message, I just knew you had to
be wrong and the document was going to be there when I went
looking for it. Doesn't it seem just a little bit
unbelievable to you that the IRS would put virtually all
their forms, instructions and publications on-line but not
put on-line the one instruction booklet used by more people
than any other?

There's one that's 85 pages and one that includes several
schedules that's 142 pages. (Under forms and instructions,
not under publications).

Wrong. 1040 tax instruction booklets (70 odd pages long)
are not on the IRS website.

I believe that if "they" see you used a computer program
to prepare your return (even if you filed a physical
return), you won't be sent a booklet.

The point is that all of the forms and instructions that
they might mail to you are available on the IRS web site.

He wasn't talking about filing electronically, he was
talking about going to the web site and downloading the
forms.

I've never used a paid preparer. I e-file with TurboTax and
I haven't received a booklet in years.

But our "clients" at TaxAide complain they've stopped
receiving forms, since we've been e-filing for them.

And in my personal case, I have continued to choose the
alternative of a paper return -- partly for confidentiality
and partly because I'm a dedicated Luddite -- yet I didn't
get any 1040 Booklet or our MFJ "personal label" for the
past two years (but, as I remarked, I still received my
1040V in the 1040-ES package -- but that was in March last
year, I think).

Mr. Woods didn't say anything about filing electronically.
He said you can get exactly the forms and instructions you
need from the IRS Web site, so there's no reason to get
worked up about the fact that the IRS didn't mail anything
to you.

In fact, given the apparently complicated nature of your
taxes, whatever the IRS might have mailed to you would
certainly not have been sufficient, so in any case you would
have been downloading forms from the IRS Web site or getting
them in some other way other than by having the IRS mail
them to you by default.

Slight correction, Bill. I efile and still receive my
booklet every year from THEIRS. So the rule is probably
"those who use a paid preparer" don't get the booklets.

Clients who ask me why they don't get booklets anymore,
either from IRS, Alabama or Georgia, get my standard reply:
"Because, they have you classified as FOH."

Oh, FOH means "friend of Harlan".
