I doubt that you can manually move the only copy of your TT data file to a new location and then have TT find it on its own. -- Vic Roberts Replace xxx with vdr in e-mail address. << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing is intended for educational purposes only > << and does NOT constitute legal OR professional advice. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2006) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |

As has been said you just need to copy your 2004 TurboTax data file to your new computer. The problem is that by default TurboTax does not tell you where it has stored this file. I have not used TT since 2001 tax year, but assuming they have not changed the basic file system, you should search for a file of type "tax" using the Find File function of Windows. That is enter *.tax in the Find File search box. Copy that file to a removable disk: floppy, ZIP, USB or even CD-ROM. Then put the copy of the file into any convenient directory on your new computer, such as My Documents\Income Tax Data. (You can also copy the file over your home network if you have one.) When you use the Import last Year's Tax Data function in Turbo Tax you will have to show TT where you placed the 2004 file.

Will I need to install the old software? turbotax will read 2004 tax file and transfer info to 2005 tax file.

| I did my taxes on my old computer using Turbo tax 2004. How would I go about getting it on my new computer. I've already installed TurboTax 2005 on the new computer but I need some information from last years return to complete this year's return. Will I need to install the old software?
