I wonder what the reason is the OP would like do this?

Most of the time it is beneficial to file jointly.

If there is a unpaid tax debt, assessed on original filings,
soon to be assessed do to an audit, or self detected, and
the OP wants to declare the additional tax liability, the
other spouse might take issue with the debt owed.
(especially if it is an audit).

With out getting too far out on a limb, I am guessing the OP
might be trying to achieve the results that an Innocent
Spouse, Equitable Relief or separation of liability
determination might yield.

You need permission from the Secretary of the Treasury or
her/his designee - namely the IRS to nake such a change.
I'd put the probability of getting permission between
"Slim and None". BTW Slim is on vaction.

You cannot change from Joint to Separate after the due date
of the returns.

No. Once you file MFJ you cannot change to MFS.

You may change from Married filing seperately to
Married filing jointly but *not* visa versa.

You can change from married filing separately to married
filing jointly at any time, as long as the tax year is still
open, i.e. the statute of limitations has not run.

You can change from married filing jointly to married filing
separately at any time, up to the due date for the return.
Once you make the election to file jointly, it becomes
irrevocable on the due date for the return (or the date
filed, if later.)

Not possible, and it says so right on the 1040X form

Default Tax Ammendment

To begin with, let me give you my background, I am an
engineer, not an accountant or Tax specialist.

I want to amend my 2004 tax return, but don't know if it is
possible to amend my taxes to change them from married
filing jointly to married filing separately. I would
appreciate any help in letting me first know if it is
possible, and second how best to do this.
