I once read an article about a pilot - a captain for> deductible ?? Is there any way I can claim my expenses on > Gas as tax deductible. Northwest - who lived on an island outside Seattle. He flew out of Minneapolis. So, when he had to fly, he took a boat from his home to Seattle, drove to the airport, took a flight from there to Minneapolis. When he finished his route(s), he reversed the course. Because he was a senior captain, he only had to fly a few days a month, so a commute of such distance was not too bad. Nevertheless, he was commuting and got no deduction for any of the expenses. Lanny K. Williams, CPA Nawarat, Williams & Co., Ltd. No. No matter how far it is, it's still commuting. And> deductible ?? Is there any way I can claim my expenses on > Gas as tax deductible. commuting (home to work, and back) is not deductible. << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing is intended for educational purposes only > << and does NOT constitute legal OR professional advice. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2006) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |

You're pretty much out of luck. Commuting expenses are not> deductible ?? Is there any way I can claim my expenses on > Gas as tax deductible. deductible. Now, I have a question that has always been in the back of my mind.... I know that mileage between two jobs is deductible. Is there anything that prohibits the mileage deduction when your second job is near your home? e.g.: Your first job is 30 miles from your home. You get a second job down the street from your home. Immediately after your first job you head directly to your second job. Mileage from home to first job is not deductible since it is commuting. However, mileage from first job to second job is deductible. In essence, you are able to deduct 1/2 of your commuting mileage because you have a second job near your home. Is there any flaw in this reasoning? I know I probably have to drive a bazillion miles just to exceed the 2% floor, but I'm just curious.

It depends on your occupation. I was told of a situation> deductible?? Is there any way I can claim my expenses on > Gas as tax deductible. where a medical doctor would stop at a clinic near his home for administrative work (he was a part owner). He then went to the hospital and or his office. On his way home, he would again stop at the clinic sometimes to review records of the day and sometimes to see patients. His meticulous recordkeeping came in handy at the audit. His position was upheld. On the other hand, a self-employed IT consultant who stopped at the Post Office every morning to check his mail and again in the evening to deposit his outgoing mail got a rude awakening at his audit. Consider moving closer to work. | No. We all drive to and from work and none of us is allowed to expense our transporation costs whether it's 1 mile or 60. Once you are at work and you drive from one sales call to another than those miles can be expensed.

| You didn't state the specifics, but if you are commuting 60 miles one way, from home to office, it's still probably not a deductible expense.
